Resumo Visando determinar o potencial energético do carvão da Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. e do Ziziphus joazeiro (Martius), o presente trabalho vem incrementar as informações sobre as espécies de ocorrência no semiárido brasileiro. Foram avaliados os parâmetros dendrométricos, tais como: altura total e comercial da árvore, diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP), o volume com casca e sem casca. Após as carbonizações da madeira, foram determinadas as características energéticas do carvão oriundo das espécies estudadas, tais como: poder calorífico superior, rendimento gravimétrico, densidade verdadeira e aparente, porosidade, rendimento em produto condensado, análise de química imediata (teor de materiais voláteis, cinzas e carbono fixo) e umidade, dos quais a Prosopis juliflora possui maiores valores, superando os do Ziziphus joazeiro e os das demais espécies arbóreas correlacionadas, tais como: Mimosa tenuiflora, Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Croton sonderianus, Piptadenia stipulacea, Amburana cearensis, Cemostigma bracteosum e Handroanthus impetiginosus. Ambas possuem um grande potencial para a produção de carvão vegetal, considerando os seus excelentes níveis de rendimento gravimétrico, carbono fixo e do poder calorífico.

Abstract This study aimed to determine the energy potential of coal Ziziphus joazeiro (Martius) and Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC., thus increasing the information about tree species occurring in semi-arid northeastern Brazil. Dendrometric parameters were evaluated, such as: height and commercial tree, diameter at breast height (DBH), its volume with and without shell. After the wood carbonizations, the energy characteristics of the coal species under study were determined, such as calorific value, gravimetric yield, real and apparent density, porosity, yield in condensed product, analysis of immediate chemistry (content of volatile materials, ash and fixed carbon) and humidity, which Prosopis juliflora has the highest values, exceeding those of Ziziphusjoazeiro and correlated to other tree species such as Mimosa tenuiflora, Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Croton sonderianus, Piptadenia stipulacea, Amburana cearensis, Cemostigma bracteosum and Handroanthus impetiginosus. Both species have a great potential for the production of charcoal, considering their excellent levels of gravimetric yield, fixed carbon and calorific value.

RESUMO Neste estudo, avaliaram-se a penetração e a retenção do preservativo borato de cobre cromatado (CCB) em peças roliças de algaroba (Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC.) quando submetidas ao método de substituição da seiva. Foram aleatoriamente selecionados 16 fustes, os quais foram divididos em quatro grupos. O primeiro grupo foi submetido à solução preservante duas horas após o abate (situação denominada “normal”); o segundo grupo foi submetido à solução preservante 24 horas após o abate (situação denominada “posterior”); o terceiro grupo foi mantido imerso em água durante 15 dias antes de ser submetido à solução preservante (situação denominada “imersa”); o quarto grupo não foi submetido à preservação. Após o término do processo de imunização, foram retirados discos em três distintas posições de cada tronco (base, meio, topo) para a avaliação dos parâmetros de penetração e retenção. Para análise da penetração, utilizaram-se reações colorimétricas, sendo avaliados os elementos boro e cobre. As análises de retenção para os elementos cromo, cobre e boro foram realizadas por espectrofotometria. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial, com quatro repetições (peças roliças), considerando-se dois fatores: Situação e Posição. O fator Situação foi composto por três níveis (normal, posterior, imersa), assim como o fator Posição (base, meio, topo). O efeito dos fatores principais e suas interações, assim como a comparação de médias, foram analisados considerando-se 5% de probabilidade. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que peças mantidas imersas antes de serem submetidas ao tratamento preservativo apresentaram significativa melhoria de sua tratabilidade, mantendo uma distribuição uniforme dos elementos químicos ao longo do seu comprimento.

ABSTRACT In this study, penetration and retention of the preservative chromated copper borate (CCB) in round pieces of algaroba (Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC) were evaluated when subjected to the sap substitution method. Sixteen trunks were randomly selected and divided into four groups. The first group underwent preservative solution 2 hours after felling (called “normal”); the second group underwent preservative solution 24 hours after the cutting down (called “posterior”); the third group was kept immersed in water for 15 days before being subjected to the preservative solution (called “immersed”); the fourth group was not subjected to preservation. After the end of the preservation process, disks were obtained at three different positions of each trunk (base, middle and top) for the evaluation of the parameters of penetration and retention. For analysis of the penetration, colorimetric reactions were used as well as the reviews of the boron and copper elements. Analyses for retaining the elements chromium, copper, and boron were carried out by spectrophotometry. It used a completely randomized factorial design with four replications (round wood) considering two design factors: Situation and Position. The situation factor consisted of three levels (immediate, posterior, immersed), and the position factor (base, middle, top). The effect of the main factors and their interactions, along with the comparison of means, were analyzed considering 5% of probability. The results indicated that pieces that were kept submerged before being submitted to the preservative treatment showed significant improvement in their treatability, maintaining an even distribution of the chemical elements along its length.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to quantify the tannic content of the barks and fruit of angico-vermelho, jurema-preta and acacia-negra using skin powder as detanizador agent. Materials from these species were ground and classified, with 12.5g of air dried particles subjected to extraction using a steam jacket type extractor to obtain 1000 ml of solution, using a completely randomized analytic design. The solution was evaluated using four treatments: angico bark; jurema bark; acacia bark and angico fruit. Three replicates per treatment were realized and subrepetitions were analyzed in triplicate. The results were interpreted by comparison of means with Tukey test at 5% significance. Best results in terms of total solids content, were observed in acacia bark (67.2%), differing statistically for angico bark (63.5%). The soluble solids content, in turn, was superior to angico bark (60.3%), differing statistically from acacia bark (49.8%). No statistically significant differences for tannin content were observed between acacia and angico barks, which presented values of 28.4 and 26.8%, respectively.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de avaliar características dendrométricas, físicas e químicas da Myracrodruon urundeuva e Leucaena leucocephala foi realizada supressão de cinco exemplares de cada espécie. Os parâmetros dendrométricos avaliados foram: DAP, altura, volume. Avaliou-se a densidade básica e foram feitas análises químicas da madeira. O experimento foi arranjado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC), com valores analisados pelo teste F ao nível de 5%. As espécies M. urundeuva e L. leucocephala apresentaram, respectivamente, média de DAP 10,00 cm; 14,08 cm; altura total 8,20 m; 12,93 m; altura comercial 4,90 m; 10,07 m; volume com casca (C/C) 0,032 m3; 0,104 m3; volume sem casca (S/C) 0,025 m3; 0,095 m3. M. urundeuva apresentou maior densidade básica. O teor de cinzas encontrado para M. urundeuva foi superior. Já os teores de extrativos totais e holocelulose da M. urundeuva e da L. leucocephala foram semelhantes. A L. leucocephala obteve maior teor de lignina total e poder calorífico superior. Portanto, as duas espécies apresentaram boas características físicas, químicas e energéticas.

ABSTRACT To evaluate dendrometric characteristics, physical and chemical properties of Myracrodruon urundeuva and Leucaena leucocephala was done suppression of five samples of each species. The dendrometric parameters evaluated were: DAP; height; volume. It was evaluated basic density and chemical analysis of wood were made. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (DIC), with values analyzed by the test “F” at 5%. The species had a mean DAP 10.00; 14.08 cm; overall height 8.20; 12.93 m; commercial height 4.90; 10.07 m; volume shelled (C/C) 0.032; 0.104 m3; volume not shelled (S/C) 0.025; 0.095 m3 M. urundeuva and L. leucocephala, respectively. The M. urundeuva has a higher basic density. The ash content found in M. urundeuva was superior. Now, the total extractive content and holocelulose of M. urundeuva and L. leucocephala were similar. The L. leucocephala got higher total lignin content and higher calorific power. Therefore, the two species have good physical, chemical and energy characteristics.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve por objetivo analisar a madeira de Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus saligna oriunda de áreas de produção do Estado do Rio de Janeiro com vistas ao uso energético. Selecionaram-se seis árvores por espécie, com seis anos de idade. Determinou-se a densidade básica da madeira e, em seguida, amostras de madeira foram submetidas ao processo de pirólise com temperatura final de 500 °C. Foram determinados os rendimentos em carvão vegetal, em líquido pirolenhoso e em gases não condensáveis. Foi realizada a análise imediata do carvão, para a determinação dos teores de materiais voláteis, cinza e carbono fixo. Os dados obtidos foram analisados por meio da estatística descritiva, correlação de Pearson e análise de componentes principais. A análise de correlação e a análise de componentes principais foram eficientes na predição da espécie recomendada. Com base nos resultados, a espécie mais recomendada para fins energéticos foi o Eucalyptus grandis.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus saligna, from production areas of Rio de Janeiro State, intended for energy use. The selection consisted of six trees per specie, at six years old. The wood samples had its basic density determined, then, was subjected to the pyrolysis process with 500 °C of final temperature. Charcoal, pyroligneous liquid and non-condensable gases yields were determined. In addition, the charcoal had its immediate analysis performed to determine the levels of volatiles matter, fixed carbon and ash content. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and principal component analysis. The correlation analysis and principal component analysis were effective to predict recommended species. Based on the results, the most recommended specie for energy purposes was the Eucalyptus grandis.

A Caatinga é um bioma exclusivamente brasileiro, que apresenta uma grande variedade de espécies da fauna e da flora, sendo uma boa parte destas endêmicas. Ao longo dos anos, a supressão da caatinga por ação antrópica vem reduzindo bastante esse bioma. Este fato se dá, principalmente, pelo uso do potencial energético de suas espécies vegetais sem a devida preocupação com a sustentabilidade do mesmo. Um melhor conhecimento do potencial energético das espécies vegetais da caatinga possibilita um manejo mais adequado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial energético e as características físico-químicas da madeira das espécies Amburana cearensis (Allemao) A. C. Smithe Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke. Foram abatidas cinco árvores de cada espécie, amostradas aleatoriamente no sítio São Bento, localizado no Município de Patos - PB. As árvores foram devidamente identificadas e transportadas para o Setor de Tecnologia de Produtos Florestais (STPF) da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande. De cada árvore, foram retirados discos pequenos (5 cm de espessura) a 0 (base), 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura comercial do tronco (até 5 cm de diâmetro) e discos grandes (15 cm espessura), antes e após cada disco pequeno, os discos pequenos foram subdividido em quatro partes, em forma de cunha, passando pela medula. Duas cunhas opostas foram utilizadas para a determinação da densidade básica, e as restantes foram reservadas para a realização das análises físicas e químicas da madeira e os discos maiores foram destinados à realização das carbonizações. A densidade básica foi determinada de acordo com o método da balança hidrostática e para a determinação da densidade básica média de cada árvore utilizou-se como fator de ponderação o volume entre seções de cada disco. Após a secagem ao ar, as amostras destinadas às análises químicas foram transformadas em serragem e feitas determinações quantitativas de extrativos total, da lignina, das cinzas, e o teor de holocelulose foi estimado por diferença em relação à massa inicial [100% - (teor de extrativos totais + teor de lignina + teor de cinzas)]. As amostras destinadas às carbonizações foram transformadas em cavacos, e carbonizadas em forno elétrico (mufla) por 5h30min. Foram feitas determinações dos rendimentos dos produtos das carbonizações, e das propriedades físicas e químicas do carvão vegetal. Médias significativamente superiores a 1% de probabilidade de teor de lignina, teor de holocelulose, extrativos totais e de cinzas da madeira foram encontradas para as espécies Amburana cearensis Piptadenia stipulacea, sendo que esta última espécie apresentou maiores médias de teor de lignina e teor de holocelulose. O rendimento gravimétrico foi semelhante para ambas as espécies, enquanto o rendimento em líquido condensado foi significativamente superior para a Amburana cearensis. Em relação à qualidade do carvão, foram observados maiores valores de poder calorífico superior e carbono fixo para a Piptadenia stipulacea, enquanto a Amburana cearensis exibiu maiores teores de materiais voláteis e de cinzas.

'Caatinga' is an exclusive Brazilian biome, which features a wide variety of fauna and flora, and a good part of these are endemic varieties. Over the years, the abolition of 'Caatinga' by human activities has greatly reduced this biome. This fact is mainly due to the use of the energy potential of plant species without proper concern about the sustainability of it. A better understanding of the energy potential of plant species of 'Caatinga' enables a more appropriate management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential energy and the physical and chemical characteristics of wood species Amburana cearensis (Germans) A. C. Smith and Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.) Ducke. Five trees of each species were felled, randomly sampled in 'São Bento' site, located in the city of Patos, Paraíba state. The trees were identified and transported to the Department of Forest Product Technology, Federal University of Campina Grande. From each tree, small discs were removed (5 cm thick) to 0 (base), 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the commercial height of the trunk (up to 5 cm in diameter) and large disks (15 cm thick) before and after each small disk, the small discs were divided into four parts, wedge-shaped, passing through the medulla. Two opposing wedges were used to determine the density and the rest was reserved for the physical and chemical wood analyses and the wood discs were destined for greater achievements of carbonizations. Basic density was determined according to the method of hydrostatic balance and to determine the basic density of each tree used as a weighting factor the volume between sections of each disk. After air drying, the samples for chemical analysis were transformed into sawdust and made quantitative determinations of total extractives, lignin, ash and holocellulose content was estimated by difference from the initial mass [100% - (content total extractives + lignin + ash)]. Samples intended for carbonizations were transformed into chips, and charred in an electric furnace (furnace) for 5 hours and 30 minutes. The income from the carbonization products as well as the physical and chemical properties of charcoal were determined. Averages significantly higher than 1% probability of lignin, holocellulose content, total extractives and ash wood were found for the species Amburana cearensis and Piptadenia stipulacea, and this latter had higher average lignin content and holocellulose content. The gravimetric yield was similar for both species, while the condensed liquid yield was significantly higher for Amburana cearensis. In relation to coal quality, higher values were observed for gross calorific value and fixed carbon for Piptadenia stipulacea, while Amburana cearensis exhibited higher levels of volatiles and ash.

A vegetação da Caatinga é explorada para energia, mas existem poucos estudos sobre as relações entre as características da madeira e seu potencial energético. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi relacionar as características da madeira e do carvão vegetal das espécies catingueira (Poincianella pyramidalis) e pau-d'arco (Handroanthus impetiginosus). Foram abatidas cinco árvores por espécie e retirados toretes de 30 cm de comprimento a 0 (base), 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura comercial da árvore. Esse material foi utilizado para determinação das características da madeira e do carvão vegetal. A catingueira produziu maior rendimento em carvão vegetal que o pau-d'arco; no entanto, a madeira desta espécie apresentou melhores características para fins energéticos. As duas espécies apresentaram relações entre as características anatômicas, físico-químicas e energéticas diferentes. O conhecimento da disparidade entre as relações das características da madeira possibilita o uso mais adequado da mesma para fins energéticos.

The Caatinga vegetation is explored for energy, but there are few studies on the relationship between of the characteristics of wood and its energy potential. Therefore, this study aimed to relate the characteristics of wood and charcoal of Poincianella pyramidalis and Handroanthus impetiginosus species. To this end, five trees of each species were felled, and parts of 30 cm in length were removed at 0 (base), 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the commercial height of the trees. This material was used for determination of the characteristics of wood and charcoal. P. pyramidalis produced greater yield of charcoal compared with H. impetiginosus; however, the wood of the latter species presented better characteristics for energy purposes. The two species showed different relations between anatomical, physicochemical and energy characteristics. The knowledge about the disparity between the relations of the wood characteristics enables its most adequate use for energy purposes.

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar as características físico-química, energética e dimensões das fibras das madeiras de angico-vermelho (Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil), jurema-preta (Mimosa tenuiflora) e jurema-vermelha (Mimosa arenosa), espécies de ocorrência no Semiárido Brasileiro e empregadas para energia. Para tanto, foram colhidas cinco árvores de cada espécie estudada. A caracterização física foi realizada no Laboratório de Tecnologia de Produtos Florestais (LTPF) da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande e a caracterização química e a análise das dimensões das fibras no Laboratório de Papel e Celulose da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. De modo geral, as madeiras ensaiadas tiveram características físicas e dimensões das fibras semelhantes. Quanto às características químicas, a jurema-preta teve maior solubilidade em álcool:tolueno, maior teor de lignina total e menores teores de holocelulose e cinzas do que as demais espécies, tendo três vezes menos cinzas do que a madeira de angico-vermelho e a metade do apresentado pela jurema-vermelha.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the physico-chemical, energetic characteristics and fiber dimensions of Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, Mimosa tenuiflora and Mimosa arenosa woods, species of Brazilian Semiarid region used for energy. Five trees of each species were logged. The physical characterization of wood was performed in the Forest Products Technology Laboratory (FPTL) of the Federal University of Campina Grande and fiber dimensions and chemical characterization in the Pulp and Paper Laboratory at the Federal University of Viçosa. In general, the woods tested presented similar physical characteristics and fiber dimensions. As for the chemical characteristics, Mimosa tenuiflora showed greater alcohol:toluene solubility and total lignin content, lower holocellulose and ash contents than the other species, presenting three times less ashes than Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil and half the amount presented by Mimosa arenosa.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a influência do tratamento preservativo e do tipo de adesivo nas propriedades físico-mecânicas do laminado colado, confeccionado com o bambu Dendrocalamus giganteus. Para tanto, colmos de bambu foram tratados pelo método de imersão em produto químico (solução de 1% de ingredientes ativos de borato de cobre cromatado - CCB) e em água, durante 15 dias. Dos colmos tratados, foram retiradas as camadas externa e interna, obtendo-se lâminas com espessuras de 4 mm, comprimento de 45 cm e largura de 5 cm. Para a colagem das lâminas, utilizaram-se os adesivos “Cascophen RS” (resorcinol-formol) e “Cascorez-Extra” (acetato polivinílico). O adesivo à base de resorcinol-formol proporcionou maior resistência à umidade ao BLC, quando comparado àquele à base de acetato polivinílico, tendo as amostras provenientes de peças tratadas com CCB sido mais estáveis que as tratadas com água. Dentre as propriedades mecânicas testadas, o adesivo apresentou resultado significativo para o cisalhamento na linha de cola e o tratamento preservativo para o MOE. A interação dos fatores adesivo e tratamento foi significativa para o MOE, resistência a compressão paralela ao cisalhamento na linha de cola, tendo as peças tratadas com água e aderidas com resorcinol-formol apresentado melhores resultados para o MOE e compressão paralela às fibras e aquelas tratadas com CCB, para o cisalhamento na linha de cola.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this work was to evaluate the preservative treatment effect and the adhesive type in physical-mechanical properties of glue laminated bamboo (GLB) of Dendrocalamus giganteus. Thus, the bamboo stems were treated by immersion method with chemical product (solution of 1% of active ingredients of copper chrome borate - CCB) and water by 15 days. Before treating the stems, the external and internal parts were removed to obtain the flat strips of bamboo with 4 mm of thickness, 45 cm of length and 5 cm of width. The “Cascophen RS” (resorcinol-formaldehyde) and “Cascorez-extra” (polyvinyl acetate) commercial adhesives were used to bond the flat strips. The resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesive showed superior moisture resistance than polyvinyl resin to GLB, and the samples obtained of pieces treated with CCB were more stable than treated with water. Among the mechanical properties tested, the adhesive factor was significant for the resistance to shear parallel to glue line and the preservative treatment for the rigidity. The interaction of the factors adhesive and treatment was significant for the rigidity, resistance to parallel compression and shear parallel to glue line. The pieces treated with water and adhered with resorcinol- formaldehyde presented better results for the rigidity and parallel compression to the fibers and those treated with CCB, for the shear parallel to glue line.

Frutos in natura de C. xanthocarpa (Myrtaceae), coletados em diferentes estádios de amadurecimento na Floresta Estadual de Assis, município de Assis - SP, foram avaliados por meio de métodos tradicionais de análise, técnicas cromatográficas e de espectrometria de massas e de emissão ótica quanto à composição nutricional, ao perfil químico do óleo volátil e ao teor de elementos inorgânicos. Os resultados mostraram alto teor de água (81,4%); lipídios (1,9%); carboidratos totais (8,9%); fibra alimentar (6,3%); além de quantidades razoáveis de ácido ascórbico (17,8 mg.100 g-1); e traços de riboflavina (0,09 mg.100 g-1). No óleo volátil (0,2%), pôde-se identificar 62 componentes, correspondendo a 100% dos constituintes do óleo, destacando-se dentre eles os monoterpenos α-pineno (15%), o-cimeno (10,8%), β-pineno (10,5%). Entre os minerais (16), os principais elementos foram o K (2084 mg.kg-1), P (149 mg.kg-1), Mg (135 mg.kg-1) e, como microelementos, o Fe (6,4 mg.kg-1), Cu (93,3 mg.100 g-1) e Pb (1,3 mg.kg-1). O valor energético do fruto (57,3 kcal.100 g-1) deve-se quase que exclusivamente aos teores de carboidratos totais (8,9%).

Fresh fruit samples of Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Myrtaceae) harvested at different maturity stages in Assis State Forest, Assis - SP were analyzed by traditional methods such as chromatographic techniques, mass spectrometry, and optical emission spectrometry in order to evaluate the nutritional composition, the volatile oil chemical profile, and the level of inorganic elements. The results indicated high content of water (81.4%), lipids (1.9%), total carbohydrates (8.9%), dietary fibers (6.3%), and reasonable amounts of ascorbic acids (17.8 mg.100 g-1), and traces of riboflavin (0.09 mg.100 g-1). 62 compounds were identified in the volatile oil (0.2%) corresponding to 100% of the oil constituents presenting monoterpene hydrocarbons, α-pinene (15%), o-cymene (10.8%), and β-pinene (10.5%) as major compounds. Among the minerals (16), the main elements were quantified as K (2084 mg.kg-1), P (149 mg.kg-1), and Mg (135 mg.kg-1); the microelements were quantified as Fe (6.4 mg.kg-1), Cu (93.3 mg.kg-1), and additionally, Pb (1.3 mg.kg-1) as the contaminant. The caloric value of the fruit (57.3 kcal.100 g-1) is almost exclusively due to the total carbohydrates (8.9%) contents.

The spatial and temporal retention of metals has been studied in water and sediments of the Gavião River, Anagé and Tremedal Reservoirs, located in the semi-arid region, Bahia - Brazil, in order to identify trends in the fluxes of metals from the sediments to the water column. The determination of metals was made by ICP OES and ET AAS. The application of statistical methods showed that this aquatic system presents suitable conditions to move Cd2+ and Pb2+ from the water column to the sediment.

A Scanning Near-field Optical Microscope (SNOM) was used to inscribe locally limited Surface Relief Gratings (SRGs) on pDR1M, which is an azo-polymer film. The influence of parameters such as the line scanning time and the line spacing on the amplitude and the period of the gratings is discussed. SRGs have been used to orient Liquid Crystals (LCs), where the LC alignment takes place due to the elastic distortions of the nematic medium close to the surface. In addition, the photoalignment of the azo-chromophores was also used to induce LC alignment. In this work we investigate the use of local SGRs together with the photoalignment to get a local control of the LC alignment properties. The advantage of this method is that it is reversible and the gratings can easily be erased.

Frutos de C. adamantium (Myrtaceae), coletados em diferentes estádios de amadurecimento na Floresta Estadual de Assis - São Paulo -, foram avaliados quanto à composição nutricional, perfil de óleo volátil e presença de elementos inorgânicos. O fruto apresentou alto teor de água (75,9%), baixo pH (4,3) e elevada acidez (1,2 g em ácido cítrico). Além disso, destacou-se como excelente fonte de vitamina C (234 mg 100 g-1). No óleo volátil, foi possível identificar 40 componentes que corresponderam a 93,3% dos compostos presentes. Como componentes majoritários do óleo, destacaram-se o alfa-pineno (10,6%), limoneno (10,1%) e o beta-(z)-ocimeno (9,2%). Entre os minerais (16), os principais constituintes foram o K (1304 mg kg-1), Ca, P e Mg na concentração compreendida entre 165 e 175 mg kg-1 e, como micro elementos, o Fe (11,3 mg kg-1) e o Al (15,9 mg kg-1). O valor energético do fruto (66,3 kcal 100 g-1) deveu-se quase que exclusivamente aos carboidratos totais (11,6%).

Fruits of C. adamantium (Myrtaceae) collected in different stages of maturation at Assis State Forest, São Paulo, were evaluated for nutritional composition, volatile oil profile and presence of inorganic elements. The fruit showed a high level of moisture (75.9%), low pH (4.3) and high acidity (1.2 g in citric acid). It is a significant source of vitamin C (234 mg 100 g-1). In the volatile oil, 40 compounds were identified corresponding to 93.3% of the oil contents. The major components were alpha-pinene (10.6%), limonene (10.1%) and the beta-(z)-ocimene (9.2%). Among the inorganic elements the nutrients exceed: K (1304 mg kg-1), Ca, P, and Mg from 165 to 175 mg kg-1 concentration and the microelements Fe (11.3 mg kg-1) and Al (15.9 mg kg-1). The caloric value (66.3 kcal 100 g-1) was due almost exclusively to the total carbohydrates (11.6%).

Este trabalho objetivou determinar algumas características anatômicas e dimensões de fibras, elementos dos vasos, células do parênquima e dos raios da madeira da Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir. Determinaram-se, ainda, a fração parede das fibras e o porcentual das fibras, dos vasos, dos raios e das células parenquimatosas, bem como a densidade, rendimento e propriedades do carvão vegetal. Conclui-se que a madeira de Mimosa tenuiflora possui poros predominantemente solitários, geminados e múltiplos em agrupamento radial; poros distribuídos em porosidade difusa uniforme; parênquima axial paratraqueal vasicêntrico, vasicêntrico confluente, aliforme e aliforme confluente; raios multisseriados, bisseriados e, menos freqüentemente, unisseriados; e fibras de parede espessa e muito curtas. Obteve-se um rendimento de 39,68% em carvão vegetal, com teor de carbono fixo de 71,70%, densidade igual a 0,51g/cm³, carbono fixo de 71,79 e poder calórico de 6.866 cal/g.

The objective of this work was to determine anatomical characteristics, and dimensions of fibers, vessels and parenchyma and ray cells of Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir wood. Fibers wall fraction, the percentage of fibers, vessels and ray and parenchyma cells, as well as density and charcoal production and properties were determined. The wood of Mimosa teniflora presents predominantly solitary, geminated and multiple porous in radial groups; porous distributed in uniform diffuse porosity; axial parenchyma paratracheal vasicentric, confluent vasicentric, aliform and confluent aliform; multiseriate, biseiat rays and, less frequently, uniseriate ones; very short fibers with thick walls. Charcoal yield was 39.68% with a 0.51g/cm³ density, 71.79% carbon content and 6886cal/g calorific value.

Frutos de Campomanesia phaea (Myrtaceae) são muito procurados pela população rural para preparo de sucos, sorvetes e bebidas alcoólicas. Para avaliar as características físicas, o potencial nutricional e o seu aproveitamento na indústria de alimentos, frutos nos seus diversos estádios de amadurecimento foram coletados em abril de 2003 no Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Núcleo Caraguatatuba-SP. Os dados do diâmetro longitudinal (DL) e transversal (DT) e a relação entre eles mostram que os frutos têm forma levemente achatada (DL/DT < 1); a polpa mostrou-se suculenta, com sabor acre e odor cítrico, com alto teor de umidade (88,80%) e pH igual a 2,91. Foram detectados elevados teores de fibras alimentares (4,00%), quando comparado a outras espécies popularmente conhecidas, da mesma família botânica. Foram obtidos valores baixos de proteína (0,44%), carboidratos totais (5,00%), lipídios (1,53%) e valores razoáveis de ácido ascórbico (33,37 mg 100 g-1). Entre os elementos inorgânicos determinados (13), destacaram-se: sódio (171,50 mg kg-1), potássio (622,65 mg kg-1), fósforo (123,69 mg kg-1), magnésio (42,08 mg kg-1) e cálcio (61,26 mg kg-1). Embora a composição química dos frutos mostrou ser semelhante à de outras espécies da família Myrtacease, o consumo in natura deste fruto é prejudicado pelo baixo teor de carboidratos e elevada acidez.

Fruits of Campomanesia phaea (Myrtaceae) are used by rural population to make juice, ice cream and in alcoholic drinks to accentuate the flavor. To evaluate the physical characteristics, the nutritional potential and the use in food industry, fruits samples in several ripe steps were collected in April 2003 in Serra do Mar State Park, Núcleo Caraguatatuba, SP. The data of longitudinal (DL) and traverse (DT) diameter and the relationship among them showed that the fruits present oval and flattened shape (DL/DT <1); the pulp was succulent, with pungent flavor and citric scent, with high level of humidity (88, 80%) and pH 2, 91, high levels of alimentary fibers were detected (4, 00%), when compared to other species of the same botanical family. Low contents of protein (0, 44%), total carbohydrates (5, 00%), lipids (1, 53%) and reasonable level of ascorbic acid (33,37 mg 100 g-1) were presented. Among the inorganic elements (13) the nutrients sodium (171, 50 mg kg-1), potassium (622, 65 mg kg-1), phosphorous (123, 69 mg kg-1), magnesium (42, 08 mg kg-1) and calcium (61, 26 mg kg-1) can be pointed out. Although the chemical composition is similar to others species from the Myrtaceae family the in natura intake of this fruit is difficult due to the low level of carbohydrates and high acid content.
